Ryan’s Portrait

Ryan- Portrait

A summer classes where I teach are coming to a close it was time for one of my classes to step into the studio and work on portraits. Usually around this time I like to teach a Strobist ( ala David Hobby) semminar in which we use our portable flashes to create dramatic portraits.

One of my photoshop course students Ryan was kind enough to model for us, here are some of the results. Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment.

Cheers!

Rio Piedras street photography

This week I worked with my students a street photography exercise which saw us walking the streets of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico.

During the two days we wandered the streets we met a couple of characters and also documented some of the modern street art decorating the streets. As you may know  PR is going through a crisis, themes such as government, social economic classes and the overall struglle of the working class have been the hot button topics of the last few years.

We wanted to capture the feel of these two summer days in the Rio Piedras streets. So here’s my set of images  I captured beside my students.

Bebe plays Puerto Rico for the first time

TodaybIbgot the chance to cover Spanish singer songwriter Bebe, who performed in Puerto Rico for the first time. Playing an intimate set in the Bellas Artes theatre in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

Known for her passionate lyrics and fiery performances Bebe delighted the crowd. She shared a few exchanges with her fans who sang along to most of her hits.

The complete set of pictures is below:

Fighter portraits series- 4

Continuing this portrait series here’s one of Ivan Calderon. He’s definetly a future hall of fame boxer and one of the best defensive fighters to come out of Puerto Rico.

This image for me is touching since it was taken during his first loss. Facing a younger, bigger and hungrier opponent all the while Calderon was entering the final stages of his career. He would retire a few fight later.

Fighter portraits series – 1

So as a side project on this blog I want to start sharing some more personal work In between assigments. I’m also switching the language to English on future entries so to my Spanish reader I truly do apologize “Perdónenme”.

The first entry in this series is a bit of an oldie captured in 2010. It’s features an MMA fighter called Samuel. Back then he was a up and coming prospect, so I wanted to capture youth and intensity.

Since then the sport has fallen in popularity at least here in Puerto Rico and Samuel moved to the US looking for more opportunities. An all to familiar story in the current economic and political climate in the island.

Hope you enjoyed the picture and the short story behind it.

Cheers!
